Why do you think they can settle in a horror setting if they’re under 18?: Despite being 17, Riku has gone through quite a lot. He’s seen his world fall to the forces of darkness, has had his heart and body possessed by another, struggled with the dark powers that more than once threatened to consume him, fought against Heartless, Nobodies, Unversed, other monsters and powerful foes, and even clones of himself. He’s even been to the Realm of Darkness on more than one occasion, and has managed to come out stronger because of it. He has faced many struggles and hardships in his youth, and as such he would be able to at least settle in a horror setting.
Canon Abilities/Powers: Riku is a Keyblade wielder, currently holding the rank of Keyblade Master. Keyblades are unique key-shaped weapons that are used similar to swords in combat. Despite their unique shapes, they can be both a blunt beating weapon or an exceptionally sharp cutting tool. Keyblades are capable of many supernatural abilities as well. They are able to open or seal any door or lock, be it a physical lock, the lock leading to the heart of a person or world, or the pathway or gate between different worlds. They are also excellent conduits of magic, granting the ability to cast magic to those who could not do so originally, and can change their shape or size depending on the heart of its wielder and the keychain attached to its hilt. As a Keyblade Master, Riku’s level of expertise and mastery over his Keyblade is much higher than regular wielders, and he is able to dive into the hearts and dreams of others thanks to his skills developed in his Mark of Mastery exam. He also possesses the ability to perform a Bequeathing ceremony to pass on a Keyblade to another individual, and hold a Mark of Mastery exam to test potential Keyblade wielders and grant those worthy the rank of Master.
In addition to his prowess with his Keyblade, Riku also possesses the ability to use and manipulate the darkness within his own heart, which in turn allows him to channel this power into his attacks. Using the darkness within one’s heart is usually a very risky endeavour; you are granted exceptional power by using it, but if you are not strong enough to keep it at bay, one runs the risk of being consumed by the very power they hope to use. Riku’s longterm exposure to the darkness, and his decision to use it without abandoning the light, has made him immune to its corruptive powers and allows him to infuse darkness into his magic without risk to his heart. He is able to infuse his spells with darkness, allowing him to use magic such as Dark Firaga, Dark Barrier, Dark Roll, and other spells.
Another unique ability that Riku has is his Dream Eater abilities. Though this is restricted to whenever he traverses dreams or Sleeping Worlds, Riku possesses the ability to become a Spirit Dream Eater, which is able to hunt down and eliminate Nightmares. He gained this ability when he unknowingly dove into Sora’s dreams during their Mark of Mastery exam, and at the time unknowingly becoming Sora’s Dream Eater. He is able to fuse with other Spirits to gain unique abilities, which can also alter his appearance to give him wings, claws, and other features.
Outside of his magical abilities granted to him by wielding his Keyblade, Riku is also physically fit and rather strong. In his youth he was hailed for his physical fitness, able to hold up a seemingly heavy log with ease, and was known as one of the strongest fighters among the kids on Destiny Islands. His attacks and fighting style are unique among many of the other Keyblade wielders, utilizing one-handed strikes and sharp slashes. He also possesses an incredibly strong will, which is best shown when he is able to hold the massive Demon Tide at bay all on his own in the Keyblade Graveyard for several seconds before it overpowers him.
What is their greatest negative emotion towards an object, situation, or person in their past?: Riku’s greatest negative emotion he’s faced was jealousy towards his best friend, Sora. After Destiny Islands fell to the darkness wrought by the Heartless invasion, Riku searched for his friends Sora and Kairi, both of whom he had been separated from. Riku was able to find Sora, but became jealous of Sora’s ability to wield a Keyblade and over the fact that he had made new friends in the form of Donald and Goofy. To Riku, it seemed as if Sora had gone off and forgotten about him and Kairi, and wasn’t taking the search for Kairi as seriously as he was. Riku even went so far as to accuse Sora of this out loud, and used that envy to justify turning to Maleficent for assistance. This, unfortunately, allowed Maleficent to manipulate him, and when she granted him the ability to use the darkness within his own heart to control the Heartless and traverse between worlds via the Corridors of Darkness. The envy that Riku felt for Sora’s abilities corrupted his view of his friendship with Sora, and led to him eventually being sought out and possessed by Ansem, Seeker of Darkness.
Another negative emotion worth mentioning, which had some influence on his envy towards Sora, was his desire to explore new worlds and feeling trapped on “a prison surrounded by water”. He always wondered what existed beyond the confines of the small, peaceful Destiny Islands, and was what prompted him to encourage Sora and Kairi to build a raft to explore the ocean with him. His curiosity grew to an obsession, and became the very key that encouraged him to open his heart to darkness and, by extension, give it an entry into Destiny Islands. This opening also was what made the Keyblade initially reject Riku and choose Sora instead of him, which further fuelled his jealousy towards Sora.
How aware are they of this negative emotion, and how do they act on it in canon?: Riku is very aware of his past jealousy for Sora, and has felt immense regret for his actions taken under the sway of his envy and obsession with the outside worlds. After he is freed from Ansem, Seeker of Darkness’s control over him and ends up in the endless abyss near the Door to Darkness, he falls to his knees and is overcome by his immense guilt for his actions, and for putting the lives of his friends at risk.
His journey afterwards is one of self-realizations and redemption, and many of his actions are done in an attempt to both fix his mistakes and try to deal with the darkness that now resides in his heart. To Riku, he felt like being “tainted” by the darkness he’d previously used meant that he was unworthy of standing next to his friends, and he needed to go to great lengths to redeem himself. Some of his actions may be seen as cold or heartless in this endeavour; for instance, he was willing to act as DiZ’s muscle in order to track down and subdue Sora’s Nobody, Roxas, and ensure that the Nobody gave up his existence and re-joined with Sora in order to awaken Sora from a year-long slumber.
One of his greatest realizations he comes to, which comes to him during his travels through Castle Oblivion, is that he truly cannot escape the darkness within him or rid himself of it. But rather than succumb to despair over the fact he is forever harbouring great darkness, Riku instead chose to make use of the darkness, but not at the expense of the light within him; he would wield darkness while standing within the light, keeping balance of both within him. He calls this “the road to dawn”, which signifies his redemption from darkness back into the light. This in turn became one of his greatest assets; he learned to find balance and peace within his heart, using the darkness without allowing it to corrupt him, and still fighting to uphold the balance of light and the safety of his friends and the other worlds.
Despite this resolve to return to the light, Riku had at times still felt immense guilt and remorse for his actions. When he reunites with Sora in the Castle That Never Was, he admits that he doesn’t understand how Sora could forgive him so easily, and states that a part of him didn’t want to be found out of fear of what his friends would think of what he’d become and the decisions he’d made to allow the darkness within him. His desire for self-redemption from his mistakes of his younger self pushed him forward to not only reunite with his friends and help them push back the forces of darkness many times, but also propelled him to seek the Mark of Mastery exam. At this time he still felt unsure whether a Keyblade wielder who used darkness could truly be worthy of the Keyblade, and he he saw the exam as the ultimate test to prove whether he is truly worthy of the Keyblade he wields. After facing many challenges and once again rescuing Sora from the clutches of darkness, Riku was granted the title of Keyblade Master, thus proving his worth and solidifying his redemption.
What is their greatest virtue?: Riku’s greatest virtue is his loyalty and protectiveness to his friends. Growing up on Destiny Islands, Riku was best friends with Sora and Kairi, and considered the two to be treasured friends. When Destiny Islands fell to darkness, Riku was desperate to find his friends and ensure their safety, which was why he had grown so angry at Sora when he thought that Sora had replaced him and Kairi with Donald and Goofy. However, despite his mistakes and his misguided actions, much of what he does is for the sake of his friends and the desire to protect them. In fact, it was because of this drive to find and protect his friends that had allowed him to fight back against the darkness within him so well, briefly freeing himself from Ansem, Seeker of Darkness’s possession and later reverting his physical form back to his own after he had given it up in order to use more power to subdue Roxas.
How aware are they of their virtue, and how do they act on it in canon?: Riku is rather aware of his loyalty and desire to protect his friends, and acts upon this desire multiple times in canon. When Sora had been placed in a sleep pod to recover his lost memories after his time in Castle Oblivion, Riku doggedly hunted down Roxas, Sora’s Nobody, in an attempt to restore Sora and allow him to wake up, despite his less than civil interactions with the Nobody. He also was willing to use the darkness within him if it meant subduing Roxas, sacrificing his own physical form and assuming Ansem’s in order to use his dark powers and give him an edge against Roxas in order to return the Nobody back to Sora. He has also acted in a very self-sacrificial way at times; most significantly, he risked his life to protect Sora from one of Xemnas’s attacks and sacrificed himself to the monstrous Demon Tide both to protect Sora and out of faith that Sora would be able to save his friends. After Sora goes missing after the final battle against Xehanort, Riku is the one who spearheads the efforts to look for him, spending a year searching through worlds and collaborating with everyone to try and find out where Sora could have gone.
His desire to protect his friends runs so deep that it’s actually also caused him to subconsciously react to dangers. During his and Sora’s Mark of Mastery exam, wherein he and Sora were tasked with diving into the Realm of Sleep and entering the dreams of Sleeping Worlds, Riku had subconsciously sensed that something was amiss and as a reaction to that sensation had unknowingly dove into Sora’s dreams instead. In doing so Riku had unexpectedly taken on the role as Sora’s Spirit Dream Eater, and this enabled him to track down Sora and rescue him when he had been pulled deep into Sleep and captured by Xehanort. Later on, when he dove back into Sora’s dreams to re-awaken Sora, he admitted to the three projections he met within Sora’s dreams that he was afraid of losing what’s important to him and that his close friends were the thing he cared about the most.
